8 W Broad St

In the heart of Downtown Hazleton, at Broad and Wyoming Streets, stands a grand reminder of the city’s past as well as an icon of its future. Originally constructed as the Markle Banking & Trust Company Building, later known as the Northeastern Bank Building, and today the Hayden Tower at the Markle, this structure has quite the historical legacy.

The 11-story building was constructed in 1910 and named for the Markle family, well-known in the Hazleton area for mining and financial activities. The structure featured concrete, steel and other metal material, and at the time was the only building in the state that used no lumber in its construction. A six-story addition was built in 1923 and additional renovations took place in 1928.

As the first high-rise office building in Hazleton, in addition to the bank it featured many professional offices and a restaurant on the top floor. It also served as Penn State Hazleton’s first site, housing several classrooms in its upper stories.

The building was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. In 2001 extensive renovations were performed floor-by-floor over a course of three years, and were completed in 2004. The building marked its 100th anniversary in 2010.

Hayden Tower at the Markle Building is currently home to a variety of commercial, retail and professional businesses, including white collar and technology firms, medical, law and engineering offices, non-profits, armed forces, and restaurant and retail shops.

The first floor area is currently home of The Pines Eatery and Spirits, and features the original bank vault, as well as lobby and café areas. The mezzanine features a grand view of the lower half of the first floor, and also offers private meeting and function space. Floor 11 features breathtaking views and can be adapted for a variety of uses. The remaining nine floors all offer Class A office space.
